Purpose of the Position
Sustainable Ocean Alliance, a global leader dedicated to restoring the health of the ocean, seeks an energetic and innovative self-starter to lead their marketing team during a critical period of ambitious growth and worldwide impact. The Director of Marketing and Communications will serve as a trusted thought partner and strategic advisor to the Founder & Chief Executive Officer and Chief Program Officer in the development and implementation of a comprehensive and fully integrated marketing and communications plan aimed at promoting and amplifying the organization as it continues to develop leaders, cultivate ideas, and accelerate solutions. As the lead MarComms strategist, the Director will showcase Sustainable Ocean Alliance’s impact on a national and global platform highlighting its cutting-edge programs, initiatives, and ecopreneurs. As SOA continues to bring about meaningful change by restoring, regenerating, and rehabilitating the ocean, they need a dynamic MarComms leader who can effectively promote this vital organization and the critical role they play in addressing the growing and evolving threats against our planet and our future.

This position requires an experienced MarComms thought leader who can spearhead a multi-faceted marketing and communications strategy aimed at positioning Sustainable Ocean Alliance as the premier nonprofit organization solving crucial ocean and environmental challenges. In doing so, the Director will oversee a team of talented marketing professionals, both internally and from SOA’s existing communications agency of record, to advance Sustainable Ocean Alliance’s overarching mission, thoughtfully engage its community of supporters, and enhance its overall reputation and reach. In this highly visible role, the Director will position SOA’s Founder & CEO and other key leaders as subject matter experts on issues that are central to the mission and critical to the future of the organization. The Director will work closely with SOA’s communications agency of record to produce key public relations deliverables such as thought leadership strategy and outreach, news releases, pitches, opinion pieces, and executive talking points. The Director will also lead media trainings and support the creation and promotion of graphics, podcasts, and videos. The Director must be a highly collaborative, proactive, and agile leader with a high degree of creativity coupled with demonstrated success setting and achieving effective MarComms strategies within complex and competitive environments. The ability to effectively engage with a broad set of internal and external stakeholders is essential to the success of this role as is outstanding communication skills, proactive leadership and team building capabilities, and a strong commitment to the mission and vision of SOA.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with the Founder & CEO and other stakeholders to develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year MarComms strategy aimed at articulating SOA’s positioning, key messaging points, and value across all marketing touchpoints.
  • Develop a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy for growth for existing and new products and initiatives, unlocking marketing opportunities and media challenges. Collaborate with SOA’s marketing and communications teams to execute.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on all efforts related to branding, marketing, and communications, providing proactive advice and thoughtful counsel to all SOA staff and stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic oversight of SOA’s agency of record, which executes CEO and ecopreneur thought leadership cultivation.
  • Own a calendar of deeply defined events, marketing moments, and initiatives to fuel integrated marketing objectives and tactics to reach SOA members effectively.
  • Lead, track, and develop strategic marketing partnerships with investors, brands, and stakeholders that meaningfully drive awareness of SOA’s work and impact in the environmental NGO space.
  • Develop and executive go-to-market strategies for marketing initiatives, including positioning, messaging, customer content as well as training and communications.
  • Lead work with research partners to cement SOA’s position as a leader in the sustainable ocean initiatives preparing compelling materials, reports, briefings, and events.
  • Streamline internal processes, ensuring effective communication, planning, and coordination with the marketing team and between cross functional groups and stakeholders in the organization.
  • Work with SOA’s agency of record to cultivate a trusted relationship with the media, pitching story ideas, issuing press releases, fielding media inquiries, and ghostwriting opinion pieces.
  • Lead media trainings for key spokespeople, including Hub leaders, ecopreneurs, and SOA staff as needed.
  • Serve as liaison between internal spokespeople and SOA’s agency of record.
  • Contribute to the overall enhancement of the image and visibility of SOA at the Officer, local, national, and international levels by working closely with the CEO & Founder and Chief Program Officer as well as other key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain highly productive relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., leadership, staff, partner organizations, and external stakeholders) on marketing and communications strategies.
  • Closely coordinate efforts with the external agency partners as well as key business partners in programming, operations, and membership to ensure consistent and compelling messaging.
  • Promote SOA’s values, programs, and contributions to the planet.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to leverage, develop and retain a talented, diverse, and dedicated team as well as foster a welcoming environment with a strong sense of belonging.
  • Leverage metrics to evaluate the efficacy of the MarComms strategy adjusting and revising plans to ensure continued effectiveness.
  • Ensure that the organization’s vision, programming, and membership experience are closely aligned through fully integrated marketing efforts.
  • Create an active social media presence through forums like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram to tell the SOA story and expand the broader audience.
  • Collaborate on creation and promotion of promotional materials, such as graphics, podcasts, and videos.
  • Oversee an annual marketing and communications budget tracking associated return on investment and KPIs.
  • Continually monitor trends in the market related to membership and competitor activities.
  • Lead the marketing and communications team in a manner that fosters collaboration and instills best practices.

Experience and Professional Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, both leading teams and executing on highly effective MarComms projects.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred or equivalent experience along with demonstrated success in developing and implementing successful multi-faceted MarComms strategies, campaigns, and programs.
  • A proven track record of leading highly successful marketing and communications functions including social media, public relations, digital, and visual teams.
  • A master storyteller with exceptional writing, editing, and digital media skills for diverse audiences and purposes.
  • Ability to lead, create, and execute a strategy to leverage influencer marketing in driving awareness of SOA, content agenda and platform.

  • A results-oriented, data-driven leader who can lead highly skilled subject matter experts as well as define measurable solutions to understand marketing budget allocation to ensure optimization of funding and investments made by the organization.

  • Relevant experience working with budgets to develop and forecast appropriate allocation of resources.
  • An ability to balance day-to-day operations with overarching strategy to anticipate the future needs and options for the organization.
  • A strong collaborator with excellent organizational and communication skills, both oral and written with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to travel and work across multiple time zones.


Compensation & Benefits
  • The targeted range for the role is $140-160k along with a comprehensive benefits package.
