THE COMPANY

Genesis HealthCare System is a faith based, not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system that includes: a 320-bed hospital, an employed Medical Group with 320+ providers, a retail pharmacy division, multiple outpatient care centers and an ambulance company. Genesis serves a six-county PSA in southeastern Ohio of 230,000 residents. Its services include: a cancer care center, heart and vascular institute (including open-heart surgery, complex EP), women’s care, Level II neonatal intermediate care, emergency and trauma care, orthopaedic center, and a neurosciences center with neurosurgery. Genesis is a CMS designated Rural Referral Center, a Sole Community Hospital and is a large participant in the 340B program.

The company primarily serves patients in Muskingum, Morgan, Perry, Coshocton, Noble, and Guernsey counties. Genesis HealthCare System was incorporated in 1996 through the merger of two hospitals and is based in Zanesville, Ohio. Genesis holds a greater than 50% market share in the six-county PSA. Genesis is an advanced user of IT technology, utilizing Epic for the past 13 years. Our IT team has been recognized as a Digital Health Most Wired Ambulatory and Hospital – Certified Level 9 for seven years. Genesis has been recognized by Fortune Magazine/PINC AI as a 100 Top Hospital for the past two years and is 4-Star hospital in it’s Vizient cohort.

Primary Care
Genesis Primary Care is an extended group of primary care providers located throughout the communities we serve.

Heart & Vascular Institute
The institute is comprised of 40+ providers with specialties in General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Structural Heart, Electrophysiology, CT Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Genesis Heart and Vascular Institute has been recognized by Fortune Magazine/PINC AI as a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital in the US.

Cancer Care
The Genesis Cancer Care Center brings our Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Surgeons, and Palliative Care Specialists together in dedicated facility for the treatment of Oncology. The Genesis cancer care physician group was among the first practices in Ohio to be certified by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) as a Quality Oncology Practice. The program is also accredited through the Commission on Cancer, National
Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and American College of Radiology.

Orthopedics
The Genesis Orthopedic Center provides comprehensive care, by Fellowship-trained surgeons, for Joint Replacement, Sports Medicine, Hand Surgery, Physiatry, PM&R, pain management specialists and all therapy modalities.

Neurosciences
The Genesis Neuroscience Center brings together our Neurologists, Neurosurgeons and Back Pain Center for the care of patients with neurological disease.

Surgical Services
In addition to Open Heart, Thoracic, Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery, Genesis offers a wide range of surgical care in: General Surgery, GYN and Urogynaecology, Vascular Surgery, Urology, ENT, and Podiatry. Genesis has 11 ORs at the main hospital, a 5 OR ambulatory surgery center on the main campus and 2 ORs at the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center. We have one hybrid OR and a very active DeVinci robotic program.

Emergency & Trauma Services
The main campus level III Trauma Center sees 65,000 ED visits and 2,000 trauma activations per year. We also operate two additional Emergency Departments in neighboring counties.

Medical Specialties
In addition to the above-mentioned physician specialties, Genesis employs or contracts with with: Pulmonogist/Critical Care Physicians, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Interventional Radiology, Infectious Disease, and Wound Management.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Position: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Zanesville, Ohio
Reporting Relationship: Matthew Perry, President & Chief Executive Officer

Key Responsibilities
The Chief Financial Officer will be a seasoned financial leader with a proven track record in health system accounting and finance. This individual plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health and integrity of Genesis, a healthcare organization committed to excellence in patient care. Responsibilities of the CFO encompass strategic financial planning, oversight of financial operations, and adherence to accounting principles. This includes the development and implementation of financial policies and guidelines related to accounting standards, budgeting, accounts receivables, and patient billing.

In addition to managing day-to-day financial activities, the CFO will assist in capital formation, investment strategies, and other business initiatives to optimize financial performance. This role requires collaboration with key stakeholders, including executive leadership and the Finance Committee of the Board, to drive informed decision-making and support Genesis's mission and objectives. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO holds a leadership position within the organization. As a member of the Genesis Leadership Team, the CFO contributes expertise in financial management and strategy, working closely with the CEO and senior leaders to achieve organizational goals and maintain fiscal responsibility. The successful candidate will establish financial policies and guidelines relating to accounting, budgeting, accounts receivables, and patient billing.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Serves as the chief financial advisor to the Genesis senior executive team. Shares all pertinent information with the CEO, Chief Strategy Officer, and ELT about conditions under his/her direction.
  • Serves as a key strategic member of senior leadership team, providing consultation and guidance to peers and acting as the system CFO as required for Genesis related functions.
  • Leads financial planning and forecasting strategies that enable decision making.
  • Leads and establishes an integrated strategic and financial planning process compatible with the healthcare organization’s objectives.
  • Partners with the executive team and colleagues on mergers and acquisitions and expansions into new and different lines of business.
  • Promotes high quality, innovation, and process improvement within his/her areas of responsibility. Seeking opportunities to incorporate more automation and standardization into work processes.
  • Prepares annual operating and capital budget for Board approval. Prepares monthly reports to management and the Board that summarizes major variances from budget.
  • Participates in strategic operational planning in concert with the organization’s goals that contribute toward clinical effectiveness, new business development, workforce matters, revenue management, cost containment and maximizing productivity.
  • Provides senior executive oversight for general accounting, accounts payable, payroll, patient access and patient accounting departments.
  • Promotes an organization that is more technology driven.
  • Assures the Board and CEO of the adequate internal controls and provides testing of such controls with disclosure to the CEO and the Board. Coordinates Internal Audits through the Genesis Corporate Internal Audit Department.
  • Reviews, interprets, analyzes, and communicates financial reports and data to leadership, and the Board of Directors, with the use of financial ratio analysis, critically measures the organization’s financial position. Serves as staff to Board Finance Committee.
  • Develops and implements robust financial policies and procedures in accordance with accounting standards and regulations, ensuring compliance and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Oversees all aspects of financial accounting, including budgeting, forecasting, accounts receivables, and patient billing, to maintain financial health and integrity within Genesis Healthcare.
  • Provide strategic leadership and foster a collaborative environment within the finance department, emphasizing effective communication and teamwork to achieve organizational goals and enhance overall team performance. Additionally, focus on the professional development of team members to cultivate a skilled and motivated workforce capable of meeting the evolving needs of Genesis Healthcare.

The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with strong strategic skills, exceptional communications skills, and a track record of fostering transparent, positive relationships with clinicians, leaders, teams, and board members. Candidates should have the vision and drive to lead an organization in its continued quest to be a best-in-class workplace. The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

  • 10+ years of accounting and finance experience in supervisory/leadership positions, within a health system. Three to four years of experience should be directly in the healthcare field or in the public accounting field performing audits for a healthcare organization or intermediary.
  • Savvy, forward-thinking executive with the ability to strategically guide the organization in financial matters, help the organization meet new challenges and capitalize on new opportunities, including innovative partnerships and fresh lines of business.
  • Possess the technical and professional accounting skills, ability to develop financial and other operational systems to accurately control the organization’s activities.
  • Must be a flexible, adaptable, and proactive leader with the ability to manage the ever-evolving healthcare laws and regulations. Keeps up with trends and responds by helping the system meet consumers on their terms, increasing profitability or funding.
  • A collaborator with a track record of building, maintaining positive working relationships and the ability to network with team members, managers, executives, physicians, board members and other stakeholders and constituents.
  • Utilizes analytics, artificial intelligence, automation and/or other tools that bring greater efficiency to the revenue cycle and other functions. Has the ability to apply such tools to drive down costs and improve operational efficiencies.

Education
Bachelor’s degree with emphasis major in accounting/finance. A master’s degree in healthcare financial management or master’s in business administration with a focus on healthcare and/or CPA preferred.
