Our client, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), is seeking a Senior Vice President, US. The SVP, US will serve as a key member of IHI’s executive team, participating in the overall corporate strategy and decision making, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, with a dotted line to the Chief Executive Officer.

In June 2020, IHI announced Kedar Mate, MD as its new President & Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Mate will continue the organization’s mission to improve health and healthcare worldwide, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, improving the physical health and well-being of our workforce, and enabling the improvement of healthcare organizations. It is against this backdrop and the organization’s growth strategy, that IHI has developed a new organizational model to achieve its strategic goals. A new position in the organization, the Senior Vice President, United States (SVP, US) will lead strategy and business development for the United States with accountability for performance against key objectives for all of IHI’s portfolio of work in the United States.

The SVP, US will serve as a key member of IHI’s executive team, participating in the overall corporate strategy and decision making, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, with a dotted line to the Chief Executive Officer. The SVP, US will lead all United States strategy and client development, with top-line revenue responsibility. The SVP, US will be charged with creating a differentiated solution and outcomes approach that yields sustainable and profitable growth, and meaningfully impacts IHI’s clients.

The new SVP, US will provide leadership across multiple dimensions spanning thought leadership, consulting engagement delivery, client service, business development and cultural stewardship. S/he will help shape the organization’s thinking on new quality-related services and offerings to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry. The incoming SVP, US will bring a track record of building ongoing, trust-based relationships with leading executives throughout the healthcare industry. 


United States Business Development

  • Provide business development leadership and strategic direction from idea generation through final negotiation to assure:
    • Successful execution of projects within the region driving for results and achieving excellent customer experience.
    • The growth of IHI’s reputation.
    • Alignment of the portfolio of projects and programs to best meet customer needs and increase our reach and impact across the region.
  • Be accountable for both short- and long-term revenue and margin targets for the United States.
  • Maintain an excellent understanding of current and future opportunities and their strategic context, ensuring IHI’s services are responding to customer requirements and changes in the health and healthcare landscape.
  • Lead a continuous learning and improvement system to make improvements in operational priorities and vitality dashboard measures.
  • Drive a quality management system to improve efficiency & results on system level dashboard.
  • Shepherd a longitudinal planning system to improve execution against strategic, business, and operational goals.
  • Develop and execute dissemination plans, including writing blogs, publishing articles with faculty, speaking to reporters, and presenting at conferences.
  • Participate in strategic guidance and consulting with customers.
  • Ensure that content is developed and delivered to maximize customer results.
  • Maintain a balanced portfolio of customer-facing (revenue generating) work including direct service on projects and initiatives, external speaking and presenting, and strategic relationship cultivation.
  • Identify new opportunities for content, program, and business development including those that meet current market needs and the ability to predict future market needs.

Organizational Leadership:

  • Serve as an integral member of IHI’s executive team, which is accountable for operationalization of the organization’s business plan and strategic direction in service of IHI’s mission.
  • Be accountable for the pursuit of key initiatives and facilitating the development of new content and initiatives across the organization.
  • Partner with IHI’s Leadership Team to ensure a strategic alignment and approach to both content and context of IHI’s work.
  • Act as a content champion/spokesperson internally and externally; present and speak at meetings, external visits, and IHI conferences.
  • Act as a stellar supervisor for direct reports and an inspirational executive to staff providing mentorship and development opportunities to IHIs next level of leadership.
  • Build effective relationships with colleagues at all levels through open communication

The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior partner level healthcare leader with at least 10 years of progressive experience within a healthcare consulting environment and/or provider setting. A proven track record of business development is required, and practice building experience is strongly preferred.  The successful candidate will possess a strong background in quality improvement that ideally includes training and leading quality improvement initiatives.

Qualified candidates will have a strong history of client network development and a stellar professional reputation as a recognized leader in the area of quality improvement, bringing executive level credibility and quickly inspiring trust, both externally with clients and internally with peers/colleagues. Outstanding communication, listening and interpersonal skills are of paramount importance.

Bachelor's Degree or global equivalent in related discipline. An advanced degree is preferred.
