Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) and the Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) are conducting a search for their next Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO has primary responsibility for the daily operations of BGMC/GVI and its associated clinics. The COO is responsible for integrating the strategic plan and annual goals of the hospital and health system into the operations ensuring highly efficient and high quality clinical and non-clinical programs. The COO will work with leadership across Kaleida Health and its affiliates to create operational alignment and consistency.

Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC) is proud to be part of the Kaleida Health system and a major teaching affiliate of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
Established in 1998, through a merger of Buffalo General Health System, Children's Hospital of Buffalo, and Millard Fillmore Health System. This merger created a dynamic healthcare system that aimed to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical services to the community. Over the years, Kaleida Health has expanded its reach and influence by incorporating additional hospitals and facilities into its network through its relationship with Upper Allegheny Health System. Through its commitment to innovation, research, and patient-centered care, Kaleida Health System has become a leading healthcare provider, catering to the diverse medical needs of Buffalo and the surrounding areas.

Buffalo General Medical Center is the largest Kaleida Health facility. It provides a wide spectrum of clinical inpatient departments and outpatient services, and its specialized programs include: cardiac services, neurosurgery general surgery (including robotics), bariatrics, orthopedics, urology, vascular services, gastroenterology, rehabilitation medicine and neurology. As a 484-bed tertiary academic medical center located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in downtown Buffalo, NY, BGMC provides the latest treatment options, technology and expert physicians.

Adjacent to Buffalo General Medical Center, Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) is a combination of the finest researchers, surgeons, physicians, and other clinicians devoted to the study, treatment and prevention of cardiac, stroke and vascular diseases.

As a member of the Site’s Senior Leadership Team, the COO will collaborate with both physician and administrative leaders to advance growth initiatives, operational improvements, efficient and effective resource utilization and allocation, and further our mission to advance the health of our community. They will enable a seamless journey of care for the patients throughout the health system focused on quality and safety, patient experience, access, efficiency, and collaboration. Through their leadership, they will cultivate a culture of service and excellence, focused on patients and families, and will maintain and enhance an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of strong operational skills as well as the ability to directly lead and lead through influence at a large, complex facility. Strategically, the COO will need to ensure that community needs are met while optimizing hospital performance. The COO will drive improvement in all key healthcare metrics, such as patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, physician engagement, quality, and more. Finally, the COO will hold a master’s degree in either business or healthcare administration.
