The Fetzer Institute seeks to reveal, serve, and inspire an emerging movement of researchers, practitioners, and spiritual innovators that use love as their primary operating system. We’re looking for a MarTech-savvy, audience-centric, movement-builder who can help translate one of Fetzer’s core values of sacred hospitality into digital spaces and interactions through top-notch digital campaigns, beautifully produced communications, and solid user experiences. The Director of Communications will report directly to the Vice President of Global Outreach and lead a team of seven. The department spans a wide range of functions: branding, communications, marketing, technology, events, grantmaking, and holding love for the entire global human family. To qualify for this position, you must have an established track record of impact and results and at least 10 years of experience leading a communications or marketing team. This role will hold a particular emphasis on sacred digital hospitality within a variety of communications channels. A Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred in related field. Enthusiasm for and curiosity about the human family’s great religious, spiritual, and scientific traditions required.
The Director of Communications is a full-time exempt with a flexible schedule, allowing up to 50% hybrid work each week. Tuesday mornings from 9:00AM – 12:00PM will be a requirement, allowing this person to join our staff in our important culture work. This position pays $164,000 per year and is eligible for benefits including medical, dental, vision, prescription, 401k, 5 weeks accrued paid time off, and an extensive wellness package.
Communications and Marketing Responsibilities
With an emphasis on sacred digital hospitality, the Director will be responsible for the implementation of the Institute’s communications and marketing plan. This is 65% of your role.
Design and operationalize communication and marketing strategies concurrent with the departmental vision to reach millions of people with the inspiring call to join a love-based movement for personal and social spiritual transformation
Serve our major stakeholder groups with regular communications: board, staff, partners , philanthropic allies, and the public
Map out an editorial calendar with unique and edgy storytelling, ensuring Fetzer’s visual and written communications are diverse, inclusive and invitational
Oversee internal and external “united voice” messaging (press releases, advisories, opinion editorials, talking points, website copy, newsletters, articles, etc.)
Develop and execute distribution strategy for all channels: owned (SEO, website, blogs, spiritual resource hub, email, digital events, social media), earned (press hits and partner channels), and paid (SMM, Google Ads, press placements, sponsorships)
Develop high-impact email marketing campaigns to share Fetzer’s thought leadership, resources, and movement activities with targeted audiences. Basic familiarity with martech required (video conferencing, marketing automation, databases, and analytics platforms)
Management and Relational Responsibilities
Fetzer values strong relationships, authenticity, staff development, and beloved community. Since the VP, Global Outreach is based in Los Angeles (with the rest of the team based in Kalamazoo), the Director will be the primary on-site manager of the team, the bridge builder between CA and MI, and the primary internal departmental liaison. This is 25% of your role.
Manage and provide growth opportunities for a team of seven communications professionals, all who have budgets for both ongoing professional and spiritual development.
Manage relationships and scope of work with external vendors, freelancers, and partners
Quarterly travel to LA to work directly with the VP, Global Communications
Develop strong relationships with and provide communications support to the Ally Development and Program teams to ensure an integrated holistic organizational strategy
Model the ability to hold differences of opinion, encourage creative thinking, and design spacious and inclusive meetings

Attend the Tues morning Community of Freedom Gatherings from 9am-12pm each week.
Optional 2-2:20pm meditation time every day.
Independently directed professional development and spiritual development will be built into your work plan every year.
Serve on optional committees to advise and benefit the staff community around particular issues
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires an Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of fifteen years experience.
Master’s degree is preferred
Basic knowledge of world religions and spirituality required
A passion for curating diverse audiences and meeting audiences “where they are”
Must have a demonstrated impact record in digital growth, successful marketing outcomes, or campaign wins.
Possess a high level of initiative – being scrappy, curious, pro-active, high-energy, assertive, organized, and self-directed.
Friendliness, humor and a wee bit of cheekiness will be appreciated.
Learning and growth must be deeply held values.
