Located in San Francisco, CA, United Way Bay Area (UWBA) is seeking a Chief Executive Officer. As one of the leading nonprofits in the region, UWBA is a catalyst for change, activating individuals and organizations to break the cycle of poverty in the Bay Area by building financial capability among residents and fighting to remove barriers to success. By inspiring and enabling neighbors to invest in one another, the organization addresses the specific needs of the community and helps more than 250,000 Bay Area residents each year through three pillars of impact: Financial Stability, Employment & Career Opportunities, and Basic Needs & Homelessness Prevention.

The Chief Executive Officer of United Way Bay Area serves in a highly visible and significant leadership position in the community. The CEO provides strong, innovative and collaborative leadership focused on maximizing the role of the UWBA in advancing the common good. The CEO is responsible for leading strategies that will continue to build its financial and reputational foundation for the benefit of its diverse community.

A key responsibility for the next CEO is also to act as a public spokesperson for the needs of the community and participate on the local and national level in education, health, and human services activities that affect the community.

The CEO will have primary accountability for addressing issues using community economic development strategies and establishing alliances and relationships that will be optimally leveraged to maximize community impact. As the strategic and operational steward for the organization, the leader will be focused on building financial and social capital, civic will, and the ability to influence public policy.

The CEO is the Chief Mission Officer, setting a clear vision for the organization, confronting the complex realities of the environment, and simultaneously maintaining focus on a better future, while providing purpose, direction, and motivation. 

Organizational Leadership

The CEO provides strategic leadership balanced with authenticity, respect for others, and trust building within the organization, with the Board, and stakeholders. Proactively drives an organization to a higher level of performance, efficiency, and growth through inspiring action and commitment for best results. 

Revenue and Impact Growth

The CEO possesses a high-level of business acumen and a broad management skillset and is effective at generating and growing financial support for the organization. The leader is able to raise funds by effectively engaging and linking a variety of donors (individuals, corporations, major giving and other segments) and volunteers to inform and contribute to advancing the mission.  

Influential Leadership

The CEO has a growth mindset; builds and cultivates a network of relationships; and is influential and leverages UWBA’s unique position to proactively increase visibility, reputation, and a competitive advantage that generates interest and passion for investing in community. Successfully navigates the complex dynamics of the local, regional, and national environment. 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

  • A firm commitment to the goals and objectives of UWBA, and to the belief that UWBA can make a powerful and positive impact on the community.
  • Experience leading a complex organization in the nonprofit, corporate, or governmental sector where there are multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • Revenue generation experience and the skills to drive growth through corporate, foundation and individual giving.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, equity, and inclusion. 
  • An excellent listener and communicator who can be inspirational and motivational, both one-on-one and as a public speaker.
  • Conceptual, resourceful and creative; a problem solver; a well-organized individual who can manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • A professional, engaging demeanor; a person with leadership presence, who exudes confidence and enthusiasm and integrity.
  • Experience navigating changing landscapes and an ability to assess, adjust strategy and tactics to address disruptions and changing demands.
  • Experience overseeing significant budgets and operating plans.
  • Exceptional people skills with the flexibility and foresight to institute contemporary management practices.
  • Experience reporting to and/or working closely with a volunteer board with a strong understanding and appreciation for the role of the board.
  • Experience leveraging the efforts of volunteers on behalf of a mission.
  • An appreciation for serving the Bay Area community. 

EDUCATION

Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree preferred.
