• Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital (longstanding tertiary care teaching hospital).
• Guthrie Corning Hospital (regional hospital and cancer center).
• Guthrie Cortland Medical Center (acute care facility with attached cancer center, behavioral health unit, and residential care facility).
• Guthrie Troy Community Hospital (critical access hospital).
• Towanda Campus (acute care satellite campus of Guthrie Robert Packer hospital with a skilled nursing unit, personal care home, rehab unit, and med/surg unit).
• Guthrie Lourdes Hospital (newly acquired acute care hospital in Binghamton, NY).
Guthrie is also the home of one of the longest established group practices in the country, Guthrie Medical Group, with close to 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers that serve more than 1.5 million patients across 22 communities annually. Additionally, The Donald Guthrie Foundation, originally established in 1942 by Dr. Guthrie, focuses on clinical research, LEAP testing service, and the Institutional Review Board.
The Medical Education Department at Guthrie / Robert Packer Hospital offers a robust array of residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pharmacy, General Surgery, Nursing, Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesiology, along with fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Gastroenterology, and Pulmonary / Critical Care Medicine. Medical students from affiliated schools receive clinical training on site.
The department also provides Continuing Medical Education, hosts weekly Grand Rounds, and supports the Guthrie Scholars Program, which offers early medical school acceptance to outstanding local students. In partnership with Mansfield University, additional programs include Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, and Medical Laboratory Science.

The Opportunity
Position: Chief Digital Officer

Over the past four and a half years, Guthrie has doubled in size, expanding its reach and impact as an integrated rural healthcare system delivering care across more than 10,000 square miles. A national model in rural healthcare, the organization is continuing to mature its technology and digital organization to further enhance patient care, optimize clinical operations, and drive continued growth across its network. Paramount to this initiative, Guthrie is seeking a strategic and operational Chief Digital Officer (CDO) to lead the digital strategy and IT function into the future.
The Chief Digital Officer will be at the center of Guthrie’s innovation, strategic direction, and operational excellence—serving as both a trusted partner to the CEO and senior leadership team and a hands-on operational leader who ensures systems are stable, optimized, and delivering measurable value. Epic and application expertise are essential, as Guthrie has made significant investments in advanced technologies, including decision-support tools layered on Epic and AI platforms that guide clinical decision-making. This leader will drive system governance, particularly around data and AI initiatives, and play a key role in maximizing the impact of Guthrie’s digital investments — helping the organization transform care delivery and advance its mission of providing the highest quality patient care.
Overseeing all facets of IT—including infrastructure, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital health platforms such as Epic, Oracle Cloud, and Microsoft M365—the CDO will focus on strengthening system governance, maximizing the performance of deployed technologies, enhancing EMR usability and satisfaction, elevating the patient experience, and sustaining achievements such as Epic Gold Stars Level Ten and Honor Roll status. This change agent will communicate effectively across clinical, operational, and technical teams, fostering a culture of innovation while ensuring operational excellence.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in healthcare IT, a track record of enterprise-wide transformation, and a collaborative leadership style that inspires alignment and action. Experience with HIE, cloud-based services, and multi-site operations is highly relevant, as is a commitment to Guthrie’s mission and values. This is a high-impact, future-facing role for a strategic and operational leader who can translate technology into meaningful outcomes for patients, providers, and the organization.
Key Responsibilities
The CDO will be responsible for the following:
Strategic Leadership
• Develop and implement a comprehensive digital strategy that aligns with the health system’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
• Lead digital innovation initiatives to improve patient engagement, care delivery, and operational efficiency.
• Establish a digital governance framework to ensure alignment and prioritization of digital initiatives across the enterprise.
Digital Health Transformation
• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of digital health platforms across the Guthrie Pulse center (telehealth, remote monitoring, patient portals, mobile apps, AI-driven clinical tools).
• Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to integrate digital solutions into care pathways, workflows, and population health programs.
• Ensure that digital initiatives support value-based care, quality improvement, and improved health outcomes.
• Drive optimization of Oracle Cloud platform.
• Assess and deploy AI enhanced platforms.
Operational Excellence, Technology & Data Enablement
• Ensure that core infrastructure, security, data, and applications are running in a highly efficient, secure, reliable way. Foster a culture of operational excellence, transparency, and collaboration across Guthrie leadership.
• Ensure that technology infrastructure supports digital innovation. Lead an necessary insourcing efforts with precision.
• Drive the use of analytics, big data, and artificial intelligence for clinical decision support, operational optimization, and personalized medicine.
• Promote interoperability, data security, and compliance with healthcare regulations (HIPAA, HITECH, CMS, FDA).
Change Management & Culture
• Foster a culture of digital innovation and transformation, without compromising operational excellence and reliability, throughout the organization.
• Champion user-centered design and promote clinician, staff, and patient adoption of digital solutions.
• Provide executive leadership in workforce development related to digital competencies.
Financial & Performance Management
• Develop business cases for digital initiatives, ensuring return on investment (ROI) and alignment with financial targets.
• Monitor performance metrics for digital programs, reporting results to the executive team and board of directors.
• Secure and manage partnerships with vendors, startups, and technology partners to accelerate digital transformation.
Experience and Professional Qualifications
The Chief Digital Officer (CDO) will be a seasoned healthcare technology executive with progressive leadership experience in IT strategy, operational excellence, and strategic acumen. Prior experience in an integrated delivery health system is strongly preferred, along with expertise in clinical systems, data analytics, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset, operational discipline, and a collaborative leadership style that aligns with Guthrie’s mission and values.
Key qualifications include:
• Healthcare IT Leadership: A minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare technology, digital transformation, or related fields. Proven success in leading enterprise-wide digital initiatives and managing complex IT environments across multiple facilities. Epic and broad applications experience is a must.
• Strategic and Operational Acumen: Demonstrated ability to develop and execute IT strategies that support clinical, operational, and financial goals. Experience managing capital and operating budgets, building business cases for digital investments, and delivering measurable ROI.
• Digital Health Expertise: Deep understanding of digital health platforms including Epic, Oracle Cloud, Microsoft M365, and AI-enhanced tools. Experience with telehealth, remote monitoring, patient portals, and mobile health applications is highly desirable.
• Cybersecurity and Compliance: Experience overseeing cybersecurity programs and ensuring compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, CMS, FDA, and other regulatory standards. Familiarity with HITRUST certification and risk management best practices.
• Data and Analytics Leadership: Proven ability to lead enterprise data strategies, including business intelligence, analytics, and health information exchange (HIE). Skilled in leveraging data to support clinical decision-making and operational efficiency.
• Change Management and Culture Building: A transformational leader who fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Adept at leading change initiatives and driving adoption of digital solutions across clinical and operational teams.
• Stakeholder Engagement and Communication: Exceptional communication and influencing skills. Comfortable engaging with executives, clinicians, board members, and external partners. Able to translate complex technology concepts into clear, actionable business outcomes.
• Talent Development and Team Building: Experience mentoring and developing high-performing IT teams. Committed to workforce development and building digital competencies across the organization.

Education
An undergraduate degree in computer/information science or relevant healthcare discipline is required. A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Information Technology, or related field required. A Clinical background (MD, DO, RN) preferred but not required.
