The Opportunity

Munson Healthcare is seeking an authentic, collaborative, and results-oriented executive to help lead operations for its $300+M, three-hospital East Region (Otsego Memorial Hospital, Grayling Hospital, & Charlevoix Hospital), while also serving as President for Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH). In collaboration with system and regional leaders, this executive will ensure outstanding performance in quality, service and patient care at OMH and throughout the East Region, as well as look for opportunities for strategic growth. He/She will also continue to drive integration and system-ness as a key leader in this region for Munson Healthcare.

Otsego Memorial Hospital was founded in 1951 and has grown steadily through the years, keeping pace with medical advances and with the growth in the region. The hospital’s net revenues now exceed $125M. A recent $14.8 million expansion and renovation project benefits our patients and community through enhanced emergency and surgical services. These improvements allow us to serve our patients even better, with more efficiency, privacy, and comfort.

Located 60 miles northeast of Traverse City, Otsego Memorial Hospital’s 46 licensed beds offers a wide range of services, including diagnostic, emergency, surgical, heart, cancer, maternity, physical therapy, and more.

Otsego Memorial Hospital has a medical staff of more than 70 doctors and advanced practice professionals who provide primary and specialty care. With support from more than 800 dedicated employees, Otsego Memorial Hospital serves residents and visitors throughout a region that includes Atlanta, Cheboygan, Elmira, Frederic, Gaylord, Indian River, Johannesburg, Lewiston, Waters, Wolverine, Vanderbilt and other nearby communities. OMH provides excellent care, close to home. Patients are treated with the friendliness and heartfelt, personal assistance that are hallmarks of the Gaylord region.

OMH is currently embarked on a $30M expansion project that will upgrade and enlarge existing patient rooms, including converting more rooms to fully private. The Birthing Center and ICU will also be expanded for greater capacity. This is a very exciting time of growth at OMH! Current facilities/services include:

Intensive Care

Five (expanding to ten as part of the construction project) large private rooms in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are set up to provide highly specialized care for critically ill or injured patients. These rooms have an abundance of natural light and space for family members.

Surgical Services and Medical-Surgical Unit

New and renovated surgical space offers the latest in surgical technology, including a robotic surgical system for advanced, minimally invasive surgeries. OMH’s expert surgical services team includes general surgery and orthopedic surgery specialists who are experienced in minimally invasive techniques that can result in shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries. A new ambulatory surgery center is under construction on OMH’s campus to offer a low cost high quality outpatient surgery option within the community. The 29-bed Medical-Surgical Unit provides patients with skilled and attentive pre- and post-surgical care, as well as general medical nursing care.

Birthing Center

Helping welcome new babies into the world is a special joy and privilege for OMH, assisting patients each step of the way in its family-focused Birthing Center. The Birthing Center ensures comfort, privacy, and safety, including a Level 1 nursery focused on infant safety. Construction of a new, expanded state of the art Birthing Center is part of the expansion project currently underway at OMH.

Close to Home Cancer Care

The Cancer and Infusion Center is located near the hospital and provides skilled cancer and infusion treatment in a comfortable setting. From diagnostic services to treatment therapies, patients receive close-to-home care, including on-site lab, pharmacy, and support services for each step of the cancer journey. Many services are provided locally in Gaylord; radiation therapies are delivered in Traverse City at the Cowell Family Cancer Center.

Heart Care in Gaylord

Patients receive most preventive, diagnostic, and follow-up heart care right in Gaylord. Cardiologists from Munson Healthcare’s award-winning heart team travel to Gaylord every week to see patients on the Otsego Memorial Hospital campus.

Emergency Care

OMH’s recently expanded 19-bed Emergency Department is always open to provide life-saving care for heart attack, stroke, and other serious illnesses, as well as traumatic injuries. Two new trauma rooms provide the latest in emergency technology. Board-certified medical staff and specially-trained nursing staff are standing by to provide calm and complete care during any medical emergency.

Advanced Diagnostics

The first step in exceptional care is an accurate, timely diagnosis. OMH proudly offers advanced diagnostic services to the community, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, digital mammography, nuclear medicine, and PET-CT imaging.

East Region:

In addition to Otsego Memorial Hospital, Munson Healthcare’s East Region also includes Grayling Hospital and Charlevoix Hospital, as well as plans for expansion of new services in Petoskey, MI:

Grayling Hospital

Grayling Hospital is located on the pristine waters of the AuSable River in northern Michigan. Patients in the hospital’s Cancer and Infusion Center, those recovering from surgery, and mothers resting with their infants in the Maternal and Newborn Care Center enjoy a quiet, peaceful setting.

Founded in 1911 and located 50 miles east of Traverse City, Grayling Hospital serves residents and visitors to Crawford, Roscommon, and Oscoda counties.

Near the busy I-75 corridor, Grayling Hospital’s Emergency Department triages and treats trauma patients and others with emergency needs. The hospital also serves Camp Grayling, the largest National Guard training center in the country. Military and law enforcement personnel train year-round and about 200 camp attendees are treated in the hospital’s Emergency Department each year.

Charlevoix Hospital

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital is a treasured gem among rural community hospitals in northern Michigan. Nestled in a quiet residential neighbourhood along the Lake Michigan shore, patients feel at home from the moment they step in the door. Petoskey Community Health Center

Munson is significantly expanding its presence in the Petoskey, MI area with a new Community Health Center with urgent care, primary care, specialty care and diagnostic services. Property has been purchased and construction is underway with plans to open and operationalize these new services within the next 12 months.

The Role

The East Region Chief Operating Officer and President, Otsego Memorial Hospital (COO/President) will be an influential leader within Munson Healthcare’s East Region (Otsego Memorial Hospital, Grayling Hospital, and Charlevoix Hospital), local hospitals and the community. The COO/President will align hospital leaders, staff, and providers around the priorities and a forward-looking vision to enable the hospital, region and system to thrive in the evolving healthcare landscape. This position will also work with the Regional Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to align operations and processes across the region, consistent with Munson’s Regional Care Transformation plan.

The COO/President has direct contact and working relationships with all levels of management, medical staff, and CHC members. Provides leadership and direction/oversight in a matrixed capacity to all regional leaders including Facilities, Imaging, Lab, Rehab, Pharmacy, and Provider Network/Service Line Executives. Has direct supervision of senior leaders at OMH. The COO/President also serves on the Operations Leadership Team, Regional Senior Leadership Team, and has a close working relationship with other Presidents and system leaders.

The COO/President has overall responsibility for day-to-day operations of Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH); oversight and accountability for operating and capital budgets/investments for the East Region; support in the analysis of program growth and business development opportunities; assisting in the integration of operations within the region and in alignment with the Munson Healthcare system and overall operating performance; drive cultural change consistent with the organizations values; and focus on clinical talent acquisition and development. The COO/President will serve as the “face of the organization” within the local community and be an active community leader through local business and non-profit relationships and service. A pivotal part of this leader’s role will be to help create a “one system” mentality, driving increased collaboration and performance within the East Region and across Munson Healthcare.

  • This position has responsibility in achievement of the hospital and region’s organizational goals, implementation of strategic initiatives and effective leadership of day-to-day operations.
  • Provides leadership for the region and hospital that advances True North performance and MHC strategic goals.
  • Is an advisor to the Regional President in key decisions affecting community hospitals and the region.
  • In coordination with the Regional President, drives implementation of Munson’s strategic plan and Regional Care Transformation plan including developing OMH as a regional hospital and integrating acute care operations across the East Region.
  • Partners with Women’s & Children’s, Regional and Physician Network leadership to develop and implement an integrated obstetrics program for OMH and Grayling Hospitals.
  • Works with regional and system senior leaders to identify growth opportunities and to assure financial targets are met.
  • Maintains effective and collaborative relationships with the medical staff that inspire loyalty, ensure the ability to meet the health needs of the community and advance quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction.
  • Plays a key role in defining the provider recruitment goals for the region and participating in this recruitment process, as appropriate.
  • Accountable for planning, organizing and directing hospital operations to ensure that quality care is provided, and True North goals are achieved.
  • Assure compliance with the standards of the Joint Commission and all regulatory bodies are met by the hospital and provides guidance to the region.
  • Facilitates communication between governance, the Medical Staff and departments of the region & hospital.
  • Ensures that the hospital is appropriately represented in the community; and is actively involved in civic activities.
  • Accepts overall responsibility for the operational performance of the hospital and contribution to the region.
  • Takes personal responsibility for the operation, measurement, assessment and improvement of the region & hospital’s performance in collaboration with regional and system leadership teams.
  • Leads operations for the hospital, with an emphasis on clinical and operational excellence for acute care, patient safety, patient-centered care, team building, performance improvement and strong financial results while constantly demonstrating value to consumers and payers.
  • Works with Munson provider network leadership to support appropriate planning and operationalizing of identified priorities in alignment with region, hospital and ambulatory growth and operational performance goals.
  • Leverages previous experience and ongoing counsel to build trust-based relationships with physicians, staff, community leaders and other healthcare representatives for the good of the hospital, region and MHC.
  • Continually assesses both clinical and administrative talent to build a high performing, highly engaged team.
  • Drives cultural change and holds individuals accountable to living the Munson core values.

Professional Experience/Qualifications/Traits

  • A minimum of ten years of experience managing hospital operations and administrative capacities within a community health system.
  • Proven hospital operator with a passion for operational excellence. A visible and effective leader who has the knowledge and expertise to drive the operational and financial success of the hospital. Has the ability to effect positive change across a complex organization.
  • Experience in leading and implementing innovative quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives that achieve superior clinical quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient/physician/employee satisfaction.
