Purpose of the Position
The new Director will be accountable for translating institutional priorities into operational tactics to achieve goals. They will have oversight, partner with facility operations leadership, direct line responsibility for all inpatient and ambulatory operations, including service line development and oversight of new inpatient and outpatient clinical facilities.
The Medical Director will be an outstanding physician leader with a deep passion for providing, and commitment to, all aspects of patient-centered quality care and its cost-effective, optimal delivery. The individual will be a clinically superb oncologist with the skills and experience to lead by influence in a highly matrixed, complex environment. The Director will have experience with the administration of oncology clinical trials, working with multidisciplinary “centers of excellence” teams, enhancing quality and safety in cancer care, and preparing for a more value-based health care environment. They must be comfortable working productively with hospital and group practice-based leadership and can engage the community and its potential donors.
Key Responsibilities

- Lead efforts to create a clear strategic vision for a world-class integrated Cancer Medicine program that improves access and throughput, grows market share and stems outmigration.
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives to create Centers of Excellence programs to further distinguish cancer services and improve patient-centric care.
- Expand and promote the clinical trials portfolio to increase patient participation where feasible and appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to attract and engage constituents to inspire philanthropic support.
The Candidate
Experience and Professional Qualifications
Qualified candidates are those who hold a Medical Degree (MD or DO); are Fellowship trained and Board Certified in Hematology & Oncology; are eligible for medical licensure in the state of New Jersey. Candidates with a management education (MBA or MHS) is preferred.

- Bring more than 10 years of progressive leadership experience, including responsibility for medical staff management within a complex, matrixed institution and the ability to grow, develop and integrate comprehensive cancer services to meet the needs of a growing clinical enterprise.
- Articulate a compelling vision for the future of the cancer service line, across a highly regarded academic medical system and to stakeholders in general.
- Demonstrate expertise at building strong internal and external relationships, with a track record of working with diverse management teams (academic partners, physicians, physician leaders, and clinic staff) and operating within the context of an interdependent partnership to implement clinical programs and quality initiatives, as well as standardizing operational and financial metrics.
- Be a highly strategic “systems thinker” who demonstrates understanding, innovative thinking, and expertise with various operating entities of an integrated healthcare system including both ambulatory and inpatient operations that result in greater patient access, reduced outmigration, and improved patient outcomes.
- Demonstrate the ability to drive the implementation of annual strategic and operating plans that ensure people, systems, and processes are coordinated, integrated, and aligned for optimal organizational performance.
- Be a consensus-oriented individual who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people forward. - Contribute to the improvement of subspecialty care delivery by the advancement of the cancer service line and its vital role in the transformation and evolution of the cancer-related health strategy.
- Ensure the recruitment of high impact physicians and other providers to efficiently optimize the delivery of care and build high performing, cohesive teams.
- The ideal candidate is a result driven individual with the ability to demonstrate strategic influence, lead organizational change, cultivate strategic relationships while engaging and inspiring stakeholders.
- Build relationships that can lead to the productive development of innovative educational programs, community engagement, and research activities across the continuum.
