The Future Citizens Foundation, a California nonprofit organization, is a youth development organization that began program operations in November 2004. The mission is to offer young people of Monterey County opportunities for a better future through active involvement in life skills and golf skills that are learned at our campus, in the classroom, and in service and mentorship to each other and the community. The Future Citizens Foundation operates three distinct programs in support of this mission; The First Tee of Monterey County, the Pay It Forward Scholarship and Mentoring Program and The Taylor Farms Center for Learning.
John Zoller, a highly regarded golf course designer, learned of The First Tee in New York and approached the Monterey Peninsula Foundation with the idea of a Monterey County chapter. Joining the effort was Ollie Nutt, CEO of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, along with Geoff Couch, Peter Ueberroth, and Clint Eastwood. The National First Tee program, which will be celebrating its 20-year anniversary in 2017, then worked in collaboration with the city of Salinas, to bring the project to fruition. By 2004, Future Citizens Foundation was formed and The First Tee of Monterey County Program was in operation due to the generous support of the Monterey County Community.
With the addition of the Pay It Forward Scholarship & Mentoring Program in partnership with California State University, Monterey Bay in 2011, and in 2017 the Taylor Farms Center for Learning, they have dramatically expanded the educational efforts of The First Tee of Monterey County, and will increase the depth and impact of the Pay It Forward Scholarship and Mentoring Program.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for the strategic planning and execution, fundraising, marketing, programming, and financial/administrative operations of the Foundation. As the lead executive and chief ambassador for the organization, the CEO will successfully support the mission and vision of the organization and guide the organization to the next level of growth. The CEO will develop deep knowledge of the three core programs, operations, and business plans, and set and implement the direction of the organization, including the management of staff and programs as well as the execution of its mission, vision, and strategy. The CEO will oversee the three distinct programs supporting the Foundation’s mission: The First Tee of Monterey County, Pay It Forward Scholarship and Mentoring Program, and Taylor Farms Center for Learning.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5-10 years of executive leadership experience in the nonprofit and/or for-profit sectors; an ability to provide innovative leadership to a youth-serving nonprofit organization; be a passionate advocate of the Foundation’s mission and be committed to improving outcomes for all youth; be a highly credible, selfless, proven, and proactive professional; possess a high level of maturity, good business judgement, and proven leadership skills; proven experience in setting and achieving strategic objectives while managing/staying within budget; experience developing and implementing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth; an unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation; strong public speaking, community engagement and relationship-building skills, with a proven ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including families, youth, public officials, donors, peer nonprofits and educational institutions; be action-oriented, entrepreneurial and adaptable with an ability to build and leverage new and innovative approaches to business development and planning; previous success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships; experience developing and building results-oriented teams; demonstrates open- mindedness, solicits and/or invites feedback in conjunction with self-development; strong and effective oral and written communication skills; an ability to articulate and demonstrate strong written and verbal communications, with innate interpersonal skills to help influence/inspire confidence and work successfully with varied audiences.
