General Summary
The Vice President of Conferences, Meetings, and Events leads the strategy, development, and execution of NIC's premier conferences, meetings, and events for the senior housing and care industry. This leader is responsible for positioning the portfolio for financial and operational success, including conferences, professional events, conference sponsorships, and corporate partnerships.
The Vice President will oversee a curated conference model in partnership with the senior conference program curator, volunteer program committees, internal subject-matter experts, and senior industry leaders. Together, they will develop timely, relevant programs from the ground up and align content with stakeholder needs.
The Vice President is a creative, strategic, and commercially minded leader who develops timely programming and partnership offerings for C-suite officers of capital providers, operators, and industry professionals serving the sector. The successful candidate will know how to create compelling content, build executive-level engagement, and drive attendance through a differentiated value proposition.
The Vice President maintains a competitive analysis of industry conferences and identifies opportunities to differentiate NIC events. This leader will have a keen understanding of the audience, the value proposition driving attendance, and the marketing and sales strategies required to reach the target audience.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of driving conference growth, attracting new audiences, and managing high-value sponsorship relationships. NIC's conference sponsorship model centers on access, visibility, thought leadership, relationship-building, and strategic brand alignment rather than traditional trade show booths or exhibit-floor sales.
The Vice President works closely with NIC's network of C-suite volunteer leaders to develop and refine programming ideas and insights, promote networking and connections, and effectively use their time and talent. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success presenting to and facilitating discussion among senior executives.
Program curation is committee-driven and requires strong facilitation, consensus-building, and content development skills. The Vice President will guide volunteer committees from initial topic brainstorming through final session concepts, speaker recommendations, and program structure, ensuring the most relevant ideas become a cohesive conference experience aligned with organizational goals.
The Vice President reports to the President and CEO and serves on the Senior Leadership Team. This leader manages the teams responsible for programming, planning, budgeting, registration, operations, vendor contracts, conference sponsorship strategy, pipeline development, and revenue growth.
The Vice President will oversee conference operations through an experienced logistics leader and work closely with a cross-functional team responsible for conference sponsorship sales and marketing, partner onboarding, and curriculum support. Success in the role will require strong collaboration, project management, and stakeholder coordination skills to ensure seamless execution of conferences and alignment across all aspects of the attendee and sponsor experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The ideal candidate is a strategic, commercially minded conference leader who understands how to create high-value, curated executive events. Rather than serving as a traditional trade show or exhibit hall operator, the Vice President will excel at developing compelling content, attracting senior audiences, cultivating sponsors, and creating access-driven partnership value.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable discussing conference strategy with the CEO, facilitating volunteer committees of senior industry leaders, guiding conference sponsorship sales and marketing efforts, and overseeing logistics through an experienced execution team. They will be collaborative yet direct, thoughtful yet decisive, and skilled at managing disagreement constructively.
While not expected to be a deep technical expert in every content area, this leader must be intellectually curious, highly organized, and adept at partnering with internal experts to develop credible, timely, and compelling programming. They will bring the learning agility, conscientiousness, and executive presence needed to continuously improve NIC's conference and events portfolio.
Chief among the primary duties and responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Set the overall vision and multi-year strategic plan for the organization's conferences, events, conference sponsorships, and program content portfolio, ensuring alignment with organizational mission, growth priorities, and revenue goals.
Lead a fully curated conference model, ensuring sessions are developed through structured committee engagement, executive input, market insights, and internal expertise rather than an open call-for-proposals process.
Maintain a comprehensive assessment of other industry conferences and develop strategies that differentiate NIC's conference value proposition.
Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies; champion innovative ideas to continuously improve event quality, partner offerings, and overall portfolio relevance.
Develop and present annual plans, performance metrics, and goals for the conference, event, conference sponsorship, and program content portfolio.
Build and refine conference offerings that appeal to C-suite executives, capital providers, operators, sponsors, and industry professionals, with a focus on high-value networking, content quality, and differentiated access.
Conference & Event Portfolio Oversight
Oversee the Director of Event Logistics in the planning, design, and execution of the full conference, meeting, and event portfolio; review and approve event strategy, formats, and major design decisions.
Serve as staff liaison to Conference Program Committees and volunteer leaders, partnering with the Senior Conference Program Curator to develop engaging content that attracts industry leaders and drives attendance.
Facilitate the committee-driven curation process, including topic refinement, session development, presenter identification, and final speaker invitations.
Guide committees through conference architecture that may include signature sessions in research and analytics, capital markets and valuations, economic outlook, and health policy, along with committee-driven breakout or topical sessions.
Partner with Chief Marketing Officer to ensure compelling marketing and promotions materials and plans for conferences.
Review and approve major event budgets, venue selections, vendor contracts, and event/function orders escalated by the Director of Event Logistics.
Review post-event reports, attendee survey results, and financial reconciliations; ensure findings drive continuous improvement across the portfolio.
Program Content & Curation Oversight
Oversee the Senior Conference Program Curator in developing and delivering robust educational programs across the organization's annual conferences, ensuring program content aligns with strategic priorities and audience needs.
Curate sessions with volunteer program committees, internal experts, and external industry leaders to identify topics, shape concepts, select speakers, and strengthen the attendee experience.
Review and approve conference themes, session line-ups, and overall program architecture proposed by the Senior Conference Program Curator and Conference Program Committees.
Ensure the program balances signature content with committee-driven sessions, including areas such as research and analytics, capital markets and valuations, economic outlook, and health policy.
Support the Senior Conference Program Curator in cultivating C-suite volunteer leaders and high-profile speakers, leveraging executive relationships to secure marquee participation.
Partner with internal subject-matter experts where specialized expertise is required, relying on curiosity, strong questions, and effective curation rather than deep expertise in every signature content area.
Ensure programming timetables, speaker recruitment, and session-planning processes are executed on schedule and integrated with marketing, events, and partnership activations.
Monitor program quality through attendee feedback and post-conference debriefs; partner with the Senior Conference Program Curator to drive continuous improvement in content and speaker experience.
Conference Sponsorship Strategy, Marketing & Sales
Lead conference sponsorship strategy, including positioning, package design, benefit structure, pipeline development, revenue growth, and relationship management.
Provide leadership, direction, and oversight to the Director of Development, ensuring alignment across conference sponsorship strategy, revenue goals, sponsor engagement, and broader relationship-development priorities.
Develop offerings that emphasize executive access, visibility, relationship-building, content alignment, and strategic brand presence rather than exhibit booths or traditional trade show participation.
Build and manage high-value conference sponsor relationships, including C-suite and senior-level contacts, and ensure conference sponsors receive a compelling value proposition aligned with NIC's conference model.
Coordinate marketing and sales activity with existing team members, ensuring clear messaging, strong execution, and consistent follow-through across conference sponsorship opportunities.
Monitor pipeline, revenue performance, satisfaction, renewal opportunities, and new sponsor acquisition.
Financial & Operational Accountability
Accountable for the consolidated budget and financial performance of the conferences, events, and conference sponsorship portfolio, including revenue, expense, and margin targets, with primary ownership of year-over-year revenue growth.
Monitor financial performance against plan; review corrective actions proposed by the Director of Event Logistics and ensure timely execution.
Ensure standard operating procedures, event technologies, and sponsor-management systems are maintained, reviewed, and updated to support consistency, efficiency, and quality.
Oversee logistics execution for the full conference portfolio through the event logistics team, ensuring operational excellence while remaining focused on strategy, revenue growth, program quality, and executive stakeholder engagement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as the senior point of contact between the events and conference sponsorship function and other organizational leaders, including programming, marketing, communications, research, NIC Academy, and finance.
Represent the organization externally as a senior ambassador at conferences, committee meetings, and industry events, reinforcing its commitment to high-quality, mission-driven programming and sponsor relationships.
Ensure outstanding customer service standards across the function, including timely and appropriate executive-level response to inquiries and escalations from sponsors, volunteers, and attendees.
Work effectively with internal colleagues who provide onboarding, curriculum, content, research, analytics, capital markets, and operational support, ensuring the Vice President is positioned to ramp quickly and close knowledge gaps through collaboration.
Build trust with volunteer leaders, committee members, sponsors, and internal stakeholders by demonstrating strong facilitation skills, sound judgment, follow-through, and comfort managing disagreement or conflict when needed.
Leadership, Team Management & Candidate Profile
Lead, manage, and develop the teams responsible for conference sponsorships, programming, planning, budgeting, registration, operations, and vendor management.
Supervise and coordinate with an experienced logistics leader responsible for execution of conference operations.
Provide strategic direction to team members supporting conference sponsorship marketing, sales, onboarding, and content development.
Demonstrate the ability to lead across functions, influence without authority, and work with senior executives, volunteers, sponsors, and internal teams.
Bring experience across multiple types of conference execution, not solely trade shows or exhibit-hall-based events.
Demonstrate comfort with marketing, sales, business development, and revenue-generating elements of conference and conference sponsorship strategy.
Display strong interpersonal judgment, learning agility, conscientiousness, and the ability to manage conflict constructively.
Show willingness and ability to grow into specialized content areas with support from internal experts, particularly where signature sessions require research, analytics, capital markets, health policy, or economic subject-matter depth.
