Billings Clinic
Billings Clinic was designated as the first Magnet organization in Montana in 2006. Billings Clinic is also a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which has provided clinical resources and direct access to Mayo Clinic specialists since 2013. As a regional leader in medical education, Billings Clinic offers Montana’s only medical residencies for Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Surgery (rural track), and a Rural Critical Care Fellowship. Last year, Billings Clinic’s cost of Community benefit totaled more than $67.3 million, including $20.2 million in financial assistance provided to more than 14,600 patients.

Billings Clinic’s services to meet our mission of health care, education and research include:

  • Level I Trauma Center provides emergency and critical care, with support from MedFlight advanced life support fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter air ambulance service to transport critically ill or injured patients from rural communities. Specialty MedFlight teams include trauma, neonatal (infant) and maternal (childbirth) care. Already the busiest trauma center in the region, Billings Clinic was designated as the region’s first Level I Trauma Center in a 500-mile radius in 2023.

POSITION SUMMARY
The System Chief People Officer (CPO) is responsible for advancing and championing the mission, vision and values of the health system and serves as a key member of the system executive team. The CPO creates and leads the people resources’ strategy in support of the system strategic plan for all locations in the system. The CPO exhibits authentic system leadership engaging and collaborating with system-wide stakeholders in creating a culture of engaged people committed to the mission, vision, and values and service excellence. The CPO articulates human resource needs in response to industry trends and in the context of creating a fully integrated health system for the executive team and board of directors. The CPO ensures progressive and sound human resources business practices are implemented at all system locations. The CPO has responsibility for all employee lifecycle human resources functions including recruitment, compensation and benefits, organizational and talent development, employee, physician and labor relations and cultural inclusions programs. The CPO advocates for innovative technology solutions to leverage the talent and skills of people at all locations and ensures implementation and use of progressive human resource technology to support leadership and staff.  

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS/TRAITS
Successful candidates for the System Chief People Officer role will possess the following:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of demonstrated executive human resources leadership, preferably in an integrated delivery system and/or large, complex, multi-site healthcare organization. Strong healthcare human resources, organizational development and business management background is essential.
  • Experience with integration of health care organizations including all aspects of the human resources functions to include compensation, benefits, policies, employee/labor relations, development and evaluations systems and inclusion programs.
  • Demonstrated history of accomplishments in improving performance, enhancing culture and leading transformational change. Strong business acumen and track record of successful management of human resources. Strong orientation and experience in performance improvement.
  • Experience in creating and sustaining a culture of engagement and development of people and talent linked to organizational performance.
  • Excellent leadership and team building skills as well as strong communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and planning skills. Possess ability to interact and engage with the board, executive leadership, physicians and leadership and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION
  • Advanced degree in human resources, business administration, health care administration, law, management and/or other related field is required.
