Duke Endowment History
At The Duke Endowment, we are working toward one overarching goal: to improve life for the people of North Carolina and South Carolina.

In 1924, our founder, James B. Duke, signed an Indenture of Trust that, to this day, guides our work and gives us direction on how to achieve that goal. A forward-looking businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Duke specified exactly what he wanted the Endowment to support — higher education, health care, child and family well-being, and rural United Methodist churches. At a time when government services and benefits did not always extend to everyone, he insisted that his philanthropy would.

Focus and Work
Our work in North Carolina and South Carolina focuses primarily on four program areas and builds off of strong connections with our grantees and community partners. The Endowment has awarded more than $5 billion in grants since its inception, including over $1.9 billion to Duke University. With assets over $5 billion in 2024, the Endowment is one of the nation’s largest 501(c)(3) private foundations.

In addition to grantmaking work in four program areas, the Endowment shares its knowledge by publishing resources for grantees and other service organizations, including information about what we’re learning from our work in various publications, reports and evaluations.

The Rural Church
The Duke Endowment is committed to preserving the pivotal role churches play in rural communities. We support clergy and congregations — ensuring they have the tools to walk faithfully together — as they strengthen rural areas. We help United Methodist Churches make greater contributions that have lasting, positive impacts in their communities.

Commitment to the Carolinas
The Duke Endowment seeks to enrich lives and communities across North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting grantees as they nurture children, promote health, educate minds and uplift spirits.
