The Role 

Korn Ferry has partnered with Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, to lead the search efforts for their next Director, Budgets and Business Services. This role is remote but will need to be able to travel into Durham on a semi-regular basis.

This position is responsible for the daily operations of the Office of Budgets & Business Services, and reports to the Executive Director, Budgets and Business Services. 

Purpose of the Position
Direct the Office of Budgets & Business Services, with responsibilities for the following:
• Develop and communicate budget guidelines and instructions to departments with regard to the University’s annual operating budget development process, including the budget development training. (10%)
• Direct the functional oversight of the University’s operating budget development and reporting systems, in collaboration with IT and other key stakeholders. (20%)
• Consolidation of the annual operating budget development process for Central Administration, including the ongoing management, analysis, and reporting of operating results as compared to budget for senior administrators, officers, and the Board of Trustees. (20%)
• Direct the University’s internal cost allocation process using generally accepted accounting techniques to distribute overhead. Direct the preparation of cost allocations needed for Duke’s major financial cycles (forecast, budget, month-end and year-end closing) and for the reporting of monthly operations in a timely, accurate and thorough manner. (20%)
• Direct the centralized business support for the President, VP Climate, and VP Research & Innovation, including budget management, accounting/payroll support, month-end and year-end financial closing entries, as well as other business support functions as necessary. (15%)
• Direct the fiscal year-end closing processes for Central Administration of the current operating fund, calculating and recording formula adjustments and final adjustments for various service components and auxiliaries. (5%)
• Administer the annual July 1 salary setting process for Central Administration, including providing summary reports for senior administrators regarding salary pool utilization and variances to the approved guidelines. (5%)
• Direct and coordinate various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules. (5%)

Experience and Professional Qualifications
• Requires Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or accounting with strong preference for an MBA or advanced degree in finance.
• CPA certification strongly preferred.
• Work requires a minimum of six years of progressive managerial experience, preferably in a large and complex university setting.
• Candidates with experience in the following areas are favorable: budget development/review; financial analysis; forecasting; and experience with the Duke University financial systems, including SAP and Business Warehouse.

• Experience directing financial and budgetary functions and providing strategic leadership in a university
environment or comparably complex organization.
• Managerial experience in training, professional development and performance management, with demonstrated
ability to work collaboratively across administrative units.
• Excellent communication skills including written, oral, and presentation skills, and ability to communicate well
both one-on-one and in group settings.
• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated effectiveness in working with a wide variety of constituents in a
diverse community.
• Ability to navigate complex or sensitive interpersonal situations with diplomacy and discretion.
• Demonstrated analytical skills in developing and tracking metrics and analyzing operational data to gain insights
and make decisions.
• Demonstrated skills in developing, revising and improving operational procedures, policies and strategies.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with IT and other key stakeholders on the functional oversight of budget
development and financial reporting systems and processes
• High integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize work.
