The Organization

In April 2023, the governing boards of Marshall Health, Marshall University, and Mountain Health Network voted unanimously to authorize signing a letter of intent to form Marshall Health Network (MHN), an integrated academic health system aligned with the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. The formation of an academic health system drives the delivery of high-quality multidisciplinary care, provides a forum for training the next generation of health care providers and advances research opportunities aimed at improving the health and wellness of patients and communities across West Virginia and the bordering states of Kentucky and Ohio. Marshall Health Network’s highly trained physicians and staff are dedicated to addressing the region’s pressing health issues of addiction, behavioral health, obesity, rural health, and eldercare. Uniting as a system strengthens the organization’s shared commitment to expand research, develop clinical centers of excellence, and offer new medical specialties.

Today, the system consists of the Marshall Health physician practice; four hospitals: Cabell Huntington Hospital, a 303-bed teaching hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, a 413-bed teaching hospital, Hoops Family Children’s Hospital, a 72-bed pediatric specialty hospital within Cabell Huntington Hospital, and Rivers Health, a 101 acute-bed hospital; and the employed physician practices of the hospitals.

The Role

Reporting to the system’s Chief Physician Executive and serving as a key member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) is responsible for the leadership and management of pharmacy services across the health system. The CPO will lead the use of evidence-based clinical decision-making about drug use and will oversee pharmaceutical expenses while maximizing patient benefit through the formulary system. S/he will work to develop and promote highly effective clinical, operational, financial, and patient focused services across the system. The CPO will also maintain a comprehensive and long-range system view of MHN’s strategic plan and constantly seek to identify and take advantage of new business opportunities to improve the health and wellness of the community, patients, and members served by the system.

The ideal CPO candidate will be a pharmacy subject matter expert, thrive in dynamic organizations, a collaborative change agent, a builder of infrastructure and teams, and will bring innovation as well as a culture of accountability. In addition, this leader will be a results-oriented individual with strong business acumen who can achieve success in a complex, matrixed, and growing organization. The CPO will be comfortable collaborating with clinicians and front-line staff, as well as executives, and will possess strong communication and influencing skills.
