About the Organization
Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is the oldest national engineering society in the U.S., representing over 160,000 civil engineers. Its mission is to lead the civil engineering profession to sustainably advance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of all.
ASCE is widely recognized as a leading ANSI-accredited standards developer. ASCE 7 is a cornerstone of structural design standards. It, along with its related standards and products, is a significant source of revenue.
The nationally recognized Report Card for America’s Infrastructure positions ASCE as a leading voice in infrastructure advocacy. ASCE is also noted for its two acclaimed IMAX films, Dream Big and Cities of the Future, which showcase the transformative power of engineering.
ASCE is governed by an 18-member Board of Direction, led by a President and President-Elect, and supported by more than 240 staff. The Society includes nearly 400 local affiliates: 76 sections, 160 branches, and 130 younger member groups. Its Industry Leaders Council (ILC) brings together senior leaders from multiple sectors to identify and address challenges and opportunities for ASCE and the broader civil engineering community. The Department Heads Coordinating Council (DHCC) represents university leaders and promotes shared educational and research priorities across the civil engineering field.
Operating with a $55 million annual budget, ASCE maintains a strong financial position with $84 million in assets, $43.8 million in unrestricted net assets, and $35 million in liquid reserves. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with robust financial controls. Chief sources of revenue include membership dues; publication sales, including standards; and conferences and events.
ASCE’s technical work is accomplished by over 7,000 volunteer professionals serving on technical committees, organized into nine technical institutes and a Center for Technical Advancement.
ASCE promotes sustainability through its policies, standards, and programs that support resilient and environmentally responsible infrastructure. It co-founded the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), which developed the Envision® framework to help guide sustainable infrastructure planning, design, and delivery.
Student members represent almost 25% of ASCE’s membership, engaged through 400+ student chapters, symposia attracting more than 8,000 attendees annually, and competitions including the Concrete Canoe Competition and the Student Steel Bridge Competition.
ASCE members outside of North America represent its fastest-growing segment. Region 10 comprises members in 174 countries and supports 30 sections and 120 student chapters. ASCE has signed Agreements of Cooperation with 84 national societies and engineering organizations in 66 countries. Additionally, more than 80 percent of accepted journal papers in 2024 were from outside the U.S.
ASCE is the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content, offering journals, standards, and manuals through the ASCE Library. Its magazines, online Civil Engineering Source and newsletter reach as many as 140,000 subscribers.
Members earn CEUs and PDHs, required for licensure renewal, through extensive professional development opportunities, including 15+ conferences, 100+ seminars, and hundreds of online courses. In 2027, ASCE will launch a new, consolidated conference for infrastructure professionals, ASCE 2027: The Infrastructure and Engineering Experience. Civil Engineering Certification Inc. (CEC) offers board certification in seven specialized fields.
In FY24, the ASCE Foundation raised over $1 million in both donor-restricted and unrestricted gifts.
