ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Founded in 1958, the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization representing the bottled water industry. Both home and office delivery (HOD) and small-pack businesses are members, producing spring, mineral, purified, artesian, and sparkling bottled water products. IBWA's membership represents 73% of the U.S. bottled water market (by volume) and includes domestic and international bottlers, distributors, and suppliers. Sixty percent of IBWA members are small companies with gross annual sales of less than $2.6 million.

IBWA provides its members with assistance in the following areas: science, technical, regulatory, communications, government relations, environmental sustainability, business development, and education.

IBWA is committed to working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates bottled water as a packaged food product, to set comprehensive and stringent standards for safe, high-quality bottled water products. In addition to FDA regulations, IBWA member bottlers must adhere to the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice, which mandates additional standards and practices that in some cases are more stringent than federal and state regulations. A key feature of the IBWA Bottled Water Code of Practice is a mandatory annual plant inspection by an independent, third-party organization.

Among IBWA’s key offerings are the following:
  • Representing the bottled water industry proactively on federal, state, and local regulatory and legislative matters and providing technical and business guidance through live events, annual trade show, webinars, and 1:1 support.
  • Creating communications strategies to amplify the voice and advance priorities of the industry; ensuring stakeholders have a favorable perception of the industry and its products; and positioning IBWA as a trusted, science-forward voice before key stakeholders.
  • Promoting and defending the bottled water industry before a diverse array of stakeholders including all forms of media, policymakers, and consumers.
  • Preparing weekly member communications including e-newsletters (Splash) and special email bulletins with the latest relevant updates on key bottled water issues.
  • Providing a comprehensive website with valuable information and materials for members-only, as well as a public facing presence to promote the facts about bottled water and environmental actions by its members.
  • Hosting an annual business conference and trade show and other opportunities to provide business development opportunities, networking between bottlers and suppliers, and timely education.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The President & CEO will provide overall executive leadership for IBWA and partner with the Board of Directors to shape the future strategic direction of the organization. The CEO will ensure the highest quality of member services and a robust value proposition, while upholding the fiscal, legal, and ethical integrity of the organization. In collaboration with the Board and staff, the President & CEO will lead the development and execution of IBWA’s strategic plans, deepen strategic partnerships and relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders, promote IBWA as the leading voice of the bottled water industry, and ensure the organization's long-term viability. The CEO will lead 11 full-time (remote) staff, with annual revenue of approximately $5 million. The President and CEO of IBWA will also be the Executive Director of the Drinking Water Research Foundation (DWRF), an independent nonprofit 501(C)3 foundation that was founded to sponsor peer-reviewed scientific research that addresses the production of safe and affordable drinking water, including bottled water.

This position offers an opportunity to provide transformative leadership, making a meaningful impact on behalf of the bottled water industry. IBWA members face a number of key challenges and opportunities for which the CEO will provide strategic leadership, including the need to positively influence consumer, policymaker, and media sentiment for bottled water; pressures related to plastics, including production packaging, and use; water use and sourcing constraints; and a dynamic legislative, political, and regulatory environment at the federal, state, and local levels.

The CEO will be a relational and high-impact leader who brings strong leadership, management, and critical thinking skills, with an inclusive dedicated focus to advancing the mission of IBWA. The CEO will perform a vital role in strategically amplifying the industry’s voice and enhancing the association’s public and political credibility and brand, key to effectively advancing the interests of its membership.

The President & CEO will be responsible for the following:

Align IBWA’s resources to these priorities.
  • Monitor industry trends and anticipate emerging issues to inform strategic positioning and resource allocation. Remain agile and open to environmental changes, including economic, public relations, political, regulatory, and legislative trends at the federal, state, and local levels.
