The Opportunity
The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University is the state’s largest and one of the nation’s oldest medical schools, with a rich history dating back to 1829. MCG educates over 300 medical students per class with a robust faculty of more than 3,600 across 23 departments. It provides clinical training at over 350 sites statewide and operates multiple campuses, including two four-year locations in Savannah and Athens and regional campuses in Albany, Dalton, Rome, and soon Atlanta. As part of Augusta University, MCG is a cornerstone of innovation and growth, highlighted by the recent establishment of Wellstar-MCG Health and a new School of Public Health.
As a groundbreaking addition to the academic landscape at MCG, the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Health seeks a visionary and accomplished leader to serve as the inaugural Department Chair. This new department aims to transform the integration of data science and medicine, positioning Augusta University at the forefront of AI-driven healthcare. Reporting to Dean of the Medical College of Georgia, the Chair will bring strategic insight and leadership, articulating the department's unique potential and inspiring collaborative innovation. This role requires a commitment to transparency, professionalism, and inclusivity, fostering an environment of inter-professional and interdisciplinary collaboration. Key responsibilities include shaping innovative educational programs, advancing a cutting-edge research agenda, and leveraging AI-driven approaches to address critical healthcare challenges. The Chair will also foster collaborative partnerships with academic, healthcare, and industry stakeholders to position the department as a national leader in AI-driven healthcare.
The ideal candidate will hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent advanced degree with eligibility for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Clinically active candidates must be board-certified and eligible for licensure in Georgia. They should demonstrate a robust track record of impactful research in artificial intelligence, data science, or a related health sciences field, including securing external funding such as NIH grants. A strong background in academic leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and program development is essential, as is a commitment to fostering an inclusive and innovative environment for students, faculty, and staff. This role demands a visionary leader who can advance Augusta University’s mission through strategic planning, transformative initiatives, and high-impact educational and research endeavors.
