Leadership Structure
John Muir Health is governed by a distinguished Board of Directors and led by Mike Thomas, President and CEO, and a senior executive team that drives strategic vision. The incoming Chief Pharmacy Officer will report to the Chief Administrative Officer-Ancillary, Emergency & Specialized Care Services, working closely with many stakeholders of the leadership team to ensure pharmacy services are seamlessly integrated across the continuum of care.

Pharmacy Services at John Muir Health
The pharmacy services at John Muir Health are essential to delivering safe, efficient, and effective care across all patient populations. The system’s pharmacists play a pivotal role in every aspect of care delivery, from ensuring the accuracy of medication orders to leading clinical pharmacy initiatives and working directly with patients to promote medication adherence.
Key components of our pharmacy operations include:
Inpatient Pharmacy: Inpatient pharmacies are located at both acute care hospitals and support the complex medication needs of patients in critical care, surgery, emergency services, and specialized care units.
Outpatient Pharmacy: John Muir Health operates multiple outpatient pharmacies that provide prescription services to patients post-discharge and through the network of specialty clinics.
Infusion Pharmacy: Infusion pharmacy supports the administration of intravenous medications, including chemotherapy, antibiotics, and biologics, with services offered in outpatient and inpatient settings.
Specialty Pharmacy: Specialty pharmacy is an integral part of chronic disease management, serving patients with complex conditions such as cancer, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, and other specialty areas.
340B Program: John Muir Health participates in the federal 340B Drug Pricing Program, offering discounted medications to qualifying patients and ensuring compliance with program regulations.
Purpose of the Position
The Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) is a critical system-level leadership position, responsible for leading all pharmacy services across John Muir Health. The CPO will be tasked with aligning pharmacy operations with the overall strategic direction of the organization, ensuring optimal medication management, regulatory compliance, and the integration of clinical pharmacy services into the broader care continuum. This role will require a visionary executive leader who will be responsible for the overall strategy, planning, development, implementation, and administrative leadership of John Muir Pharmacy Services.
The CPO will maintain a comprehensive and long-range system view of John Muir's strategic plan and constantly seeks to identify and take advantage of new business opportunities to improve the health and wellness of the community, patients, and members served by the system. The CPO will lead the implementation of pharmacy business operations and clinical models of care focusing on the total cost of care across the continuum of care, ensuring excellence in terms of quality, safety, service, regulatory compliance, affordability, and technology.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive pharmacy strategy that aligns with John Muir Health’s mission, vision, and goals.
Operational Oversight: Lead the pharmacy services across inpatient, outpatient, infusion, and specialty settings, ensuring operational efficiency and high-quality care delivery.
Clinical Integration: Work closely with medical, nursing, and administrative leadership to integrate pharmacy services into patient care workflows, ensuring collaboration and shared accountability for clinical outcomes.
340B Program Management: Oversee the 340B program, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements while optimizing the financial performance and impact of the program.
Team Leadership: Mentor, develop, and support a team of highly skilled pharmacy professionals, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and administrative staff, to achieve excellence in patient care.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all pharmacy operations comply with state and federal regulations, as well as accreditation standards.
Financial Stewardship: Oversee the financial performance of pharmacy services, including budgeting, cost control, and revenue optimization.
Key Initiatives and Strategic Priorities
As John Muir Health continues to evolve, the Chief Pharmacy Officer will be responsible for driving several key initiatives, including:
Expansion of Clinical Pharmacy Services: Implement innovative pharmacy practices that support population health, chronic disease management, and value-based care initiatives.
Pharmacy Technology Integration: Leverage the latest pharmacy technology and automation systems to improve medication safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
Growth of Specialty and Infusion Pharmacy Programs: Expand our infusion and specialty pharmacy services to better meet the needs of complex and chronically ill patients.
Optimization of the 340B Program: Maximize the benefits of the 340B program, ensuring access to discounted medications for our patients while maintaining compliance with all regulatory standards.
Engagement & Empowerment of Pharmacy staff: Maintain JMH’s union-free advantage in pharmacy services, maintain high engagement scores and a diverse and equitable workplace.
