REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Chief Operating Officer, UnityPoint Health - Des Moines will report to the Market President, UnityPoint Health - Des Moines.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Chief Operating Officer, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines (COO) will be responsible for the overall management, development, and growth strategies of the operations of the Des Moines market, which includes four hospitals and numerous other healthcare services/facilities, with $1.8B in annual net revenue. This dynamic leader will play a high impact role in the continued growth and prosperity of this flagship market for UnityPoint Health. Working closely with the Market President and other regional/system leaders, and physician partners, the COO will drive positive outcomes, resulting in strong financial performance and outstanding patient care. The COO will help lead the market to achieve further “system-ness”, improving integration and collaboration wherever appropriate.

The Des Moines market has one unified leadership team who lead operations for all hospitals and services. (There are not individual hospital Presidents/Administrators.) All operations report up to/through the COO, either directly or through matrixed relationships.

Direct oversight will include Cardiovascular Services, Surgical Services, Transplant Center, John Stoddard Cancer Center. Indirect/matrix oversight will include Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, Environmental Services, Food Services, Spiritual Care, Hospital-Based Clinic Operations, Physician Support Services, Pediatric Therapy Services, Child Life Services, Public Safety/Security, Emergency Preparedness and Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab. The COO will establish credibility as a strategic and operationally astute team builder who can develop high performing leaders that will drive quality, customer service, market share, and financial performance.

UnityPoint Health is seeking an experienced operator with a proven track record of success in large-scale healthcare operations. This is an outstanding growth opportunity for the right leader, as this search is being conducted with future succession in mind, with the successful hire potentially assuming the Market President position in the future.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for the COO, UPH - Des Moines role will possess the following background, experience, and skills:

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective teams and to lead, mentor and develop senior and middle management through an approachable demeanor and effective communication style.
  • Track record of commitment to quality patient care, sensitivity to clinical issues along with a grasp of the “big picture” and strong grounding in every aspect of healthcare operations.
  • Exceptional physician relations skills: genuinely enjoys working with medical staff; and is empathetic to the challenges physicians are dealing with in group and private practices. A history of working positively with physicians, understanding their needs and assisting them in development of clinical programs focused on quality ad safe medical care.
  • Strong strategic skills and thinking as well as current knowledge of trends and “best practices” in healthcare nationally.
Experience
  • Seven years healthcare experience with progressive levels of leadership experience in hospital operations.
  • Demonstrated results in a large, complex health system in a competitive market.
  • Previous experience working with different physician operational models.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health care management, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in business administration, health care management, or a related field
  • Member of an appropriate professional society preferred.
