The Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTSOM) invite applications and nominations for the System Chair of Pediatrics.

The Chair will oversee the Department of Pediatrics and its clinical entities to advance the breadth and depth of clinical programs. The Chair, in collaboration with senior stakeholders, will strategize to foster innovative care delivery models and viable approaches to enhance access, improve overall quality and safety, and elevate a connected family experience. This individual will oversee the financial growth and sustainability of the Department and all clinical and programmatic duties, with a focus on attracting, retaining, and engaging high-caliber and diverse faculty, staff, and trainees to sustain the caliber of the residency training program and to elevate the Department’s reputation. The successful candidate will be a transparent, collaborative, and accomplished leader with a reputation as an outstanding clinician and educator with a substantial track record of success supporting research and scholarly activity. They will have a passion for clinical excellence and provide an environment conducive to advancing the organization’s mission, encourage shared decision-making, and have experience working in a dynamic integrated pediatric clinical delivery model. The Chair will be committed to providing team-based care, improving the engagement and retention of the team, and enhancing systems and processes to reach Carilion system goals for Pediatrics.

VTSOM is a unique public-private partnership between a cutting-edge research university and a major healthcare institution, leveraging Virginia Tech’s world-class strength in basic sciences, bioinformatics and engineering with Carilion’s highly experienced medical staff and rich history in medical education.

In summary, the Department Chair will be a strong leader in their field who is deeply committed to the tripartite mission of the department. They will relish the entrepreneurial challenge of succeeding in the matrixed clinical environment of large-scale value-based health care delivery. They will exhibit the ability to work collaboratively across various hospital organizational units and clinical service lines, and effectively promote the division and department with community providers, governmental, business, and civic leaders, donors, and other pertinent external stakeholders. The Department Chair must be a consensus builder who also can serve as an agent for growth, engagement, and change.
